Well I guess the time has come that I need to be the walking paramedic for a while.
I have been experiencing a numb left foot for a few months now that hasn’t been causing too many issues with pain. Unfortunately the past week or so I have had pain in my lower back, mostly when sitting for too long. I have had a discomfort in my left leg too on occasion.
To say I’m devastated is an understatement. I have been doing so well over the past 12 months and I was ready for Ultra-trail next month. When I’m running and stretching I feel amazing and I have no pain.
What triggered my transition to walking for a little while was what the neurosurgeon said today after reviewing my latest MRI.
“There’s a tear and bulging L5/S1… you’re too young for a fusion…”
Too young for a fusion? Does this mean that’s what I will need in the not too distant future? When will I be old enough for a fusion?
We are going down the conservative treatment line due to my symptoms only being mild but I have a feeling deep in my bones that I’m going to have back problems for the rest of my life. For now some stronger anti-inflammatories and take it easy. We will review again in November with the neurosurgeon.
This means I am going to have to do everything I can to prevent further injury while this latest injury heals. I also need to ensure I can keep working because my family and I can’t live off nothing. I don’t think my amazing wife would put up with my moping at home either.
I am still planning on completing the 50km Ultra next month but I’ll be walking. I know I need to protect my back if I’m going to have a good life with my family. I’ll be utilising poles walking down the hills to reduce the impact on my spine. I know I need to keep up a good pace to finish it in time if I’m going to walk but I honestly believe I can do it.
So for now, I’ll be the walking paramedic until I get to the point where I am pain free and it’s safe for me to run again. I am absolutely devastated but am trying to stay positive.
I’ll keep you all updated and continue posting my walks and workouts on social media. Hopefully the walking paramedic is only temporary and I can get back to running soon.
